Oh crap
First, Morrissey gets sick, now frickin' Ken Ober died.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/11/16/obit.ober/index.html

The sad thing is, I totally about him until I saw this article. Who's next? Downtown Julie Brown?

I don't wear pink shirts
I guess it was about ten years ago that I started seeing homeboy types wearing pink shirts. At the time, I thought, "Now that's rare." Then about five years ago, everybody started wearing them. It always happens like that. Groups on the fringe do something different, and then the masses take it up and it becomes 'normal'. Doc Martens are the prime example that I can think of. Anyway, it seems to me that men were told pink was a girls color when I was a kid, but then again, I did grow up mostly in the 80's so it is hard to say that was a solid rule. At any rate, I grew up thinking that I shouldn't wear pink shirts. I know, terribly self-conscious and biased of me, but that's the way it was. Now, anybody can wear pink shirts. I still rather dislike pink knit shirts, especially if the collar is turned up, but I have to admit, sometimes I think the button-up shirts look sharp on 'other' men. I emphasize 'other' because I still can't imagine myself wearing them. In China, it isn't a rare occurrence for the shop person to try to get me to buy one, and when they won't let up on how handsome I would look in the shirt, I say, "I think pink is for girls." At which they look at me like I'm an idiot. Will I ever get the courage to wear a pink shirt? Or will pink shirts go out-of-style again, and I will be relieved of this dilemma?

This has been an incredibly interesting post. You know it was.

PS: I hate that double m in dilemma. The word rhythm drives me nuts too. What's up with the vowel situation in that word?

Current Mood: annoyed

Pictures
I haven't posted pictures in ages. Fun.

Halloween afternoon, my wife and I went to Jinjiang Amusement Park. I like that even though I am in China, much of it has that retro feel that any good amusement park should have.

Also, we went to Shanghai's museum. Here is some stuff I liked.

I'm a little freaked out by the Morrissey thing
Morrissey collapsed on stage recently. Actually, I'm not a huge fan (a small one perhaps), but it made me think of how I saw him at Vinyl Solution for his album release party when I was 17 years old. I remember that event actually made MTV News because it was like, "Hey, look what normally insignificant, backwards town Morrissey released his album." Well anyway, he is now 50 years old, so that means he was 33 then. THIRTY-THREE F'IN YEARS OLD! Back then he was younger than I am now, yet he is starting to get up there in age now. It really doesn't seem like that much time has passed. If time continues to move so quickly, tomorrow I will be dead is about the feeling. And as for his looks, it seems like he should still be handsome in a youthful way and not a 'distinguished' way. But look at him collapsing on stage with grey hair and loose skin... oh never mind.

Regardless, I wonder if the legendary fat Morrissey girls still exist in Grand Rapids. Any recent sightings?

The sex toy down the road, Timberlake and Catherine Wheel
Yes, in China, there are many sex toy shops. It just so happens that one is located near my work. As I walk by, I often glance in. No, not at the goods. I just want to see what the people look like who work and shop there. I somehow find it amusing to think of Chinese being kinky. Is this so wrong of me? I feel it is some sort of fucked up elitism on some obtuse level. Anyway, the people who work there look very normal. As if they could have just as easily sold shoes instead. No strange fat greasy men. No young bohemians. In fact, I could be wrong, but I think I saw someone doing homework on one of the display cases recently. A part of me wants to go in there and practice Chinese. Wouldn't that be weird to say in the language of Chairman Mao, "How does this thing called, uh, anal beads work?" I'm far to shy to put me and whoever would be unlucky enough to help me go through that, though.

Also, I always thought Justin Timberlake was funny looking. I don't get why chicks dig him.

Also also, I just finally found out what 'catherine wheel' means. This prompted me to listen to Catherine Wheel's Black Metallic for the first time since possibly the 90's. I dig it. Oh yes, here comes that special Top of the Rock feeling.

Somebody comment. I deserve it. Really.

If there is one stereotype we can count on...
...Asians go batty over photos. I showed one picture of my wife to my Mandarin classmates. It took 10 minutes for us to get back on track. The teacher wanted to steal the photo (although that was a joke).

Allow me to introduce my fucking rad Chinese name
Fairly recently, I changed my Chinese name. You may now refer to me as 白飞侠. Now let us examine the awesomeness of this name. 白 has two meanings. One is 'white'. The other is 'in vain'. 飞 means 'fly' as in the verb not the bug. Originally the old Chinese/American that was trying to help me wanted me to merely call myself '白飞', but I pointed out that some might interpret it as 'flied in vain'. So he said, "I know. Add 侠 to the end. It means 'hero'."

Yes, if we translated 白飞侠 into English, my name would be White Flying Hero. The Chinese kids dig it.

Roman Polanski
I don't get it. He admitted that he raped and drugged a 13 year-old. Why are so many people coming to his defense? Child rapists don't have to go to jail because they make movies we like? Yeah, I know, the judge messed up, and the victim is tired of this, but still... he drugged and raped a girl.

Stereotypes
I used to think all Chinese young men were nerdy, always wore white button-up shirts and only cared about studying. I used to think all Chinese women were beautiful in a shy way and only cared about studying. I didn't even know I held these stereotypes until I was confronted with the fact they don't hold up to reality. There are some stylish, lazy hot men here. There are some ugly women too. There is quite a bit of studying going on in China, though. Maybe not as much as one thinks. Okay, that's it.

I was just thinking
For three days or so after the 911 attacks, I couldn't keep Bin Laden's name straight. It's almost a funny thought not knowing his name. But not really.

Kim Gordan
I knew that Kim Gordan was old, but I had no idea that she was just a few years shy of my mother's age. Very strange.

Do the kids still dig Sonic Youth?

Livejournal came half alive in the past couple of days. A bunch of people made posts. I don't feel depressed looking around here today.

But most importantly, one of my goldfishes appears close to death. FUCK!!!

A Chinese song I like
Testing, testing... Is anybody out there?

Anyway, this is a link to one of the few Chinese songs I truly like:

http://211.138.112.18:9080/ColorTone/music/03/01/01/c0301011455.mp3

It's a fun remake of a very boring original. It's about a guy that sees a pretty girl walking this way and then tries to 'play it cool'.
